Users Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that patients who discontinue new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users using these medications should be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to starting weight in about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through dieting usually have a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Experts propose the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful return of appetite.

"It was like something that goes on and you become starving," said a patient.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Interest

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is greater among women than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
